DUBAI - Pursuing a degree in Canada has become additionally attractive with the introduction of Canadian Experience Class Immigration available to international students. Along with giving expatriates a chance to integrate themselves into the workforce, the system will also fill the country’s labour force shortage.
“Students who travel for their bachelor’s degree or a two-year programme can apply in their last year of study for a work permit. The work permit enables them to work for a period of two to three years in Canada,” Deborah E. Schuck, Trade Commissioner, Education and Training at the Embassy of Canada, said at the University Fair held at the University of Canada last week. Colleges also allow students to work on and off campus during the courses.
Colleges present at the fair opened up avenues for students in the UAE to enrol in varied disciplines or transfer their credits according to the college specifications. Students at the fair displayed an enthusiasm for colleges in Canada, especially since they could work in that country after they obtain a degree to further their careers.
Sarine Joubanian, who is working part time in Dubai, wants to join a course in the hospitality sector and was keen on enrolling with SAIT Polytechnic. “It’s great that I will be able to work while studying as I can apply what I study. Also once I graduate, I want to work in Canada and the work permit provided by the college will enable me to gain all the experience before I apply for a residency.”
Enid Angelstat, International Centre Manager of SAIT, explained the job opportunities their students can avail. “We have a lot of job opportunities. All international students in academic programmes can work on campus for the first six months. After that, they can work part-time while studying and full-time during the summer months.
Once they graduate, they can apply for a three-year work permit. If they want to immigrate, they can apply for a permanent residency after six months of work.”
After completion of the six-month tenure, students are trained in the education, skill and work environment of the country that facilitates easy integration.
Peter Ashby, Director of Admissions at Columbia College, said they provide the students all documents they need for the permit but the student has to look for a job themselves.
“International students are not entitled to student loans. So when applying for a visa, the student must show proof of sustaining themselves in Canada. However, if they keep their grades up, they can earn and study effectively in Canada,” stressed Deborah.
