DUBAI - Over 2,000 students from Dubai Women’s College (DWC) engaged in various physical education activities and sports yesterday as part of the college’s Health Awareness and Sports Day.

The three-day event will see students take part in various team and individual sports and recreational activities.

The college has ongoing sports activities throughout the year as part of the students’ academic curriculum.

“However, the purpose of the annual event is to bring all the students together so that they could interact and engage in sports activities together,” said Suzanne Trease, Department Chair, Health and Fitness Programme at DWC.

She said that over the past 18 months, there had been a 30 per cent increase in students taking up physical education and sports like cricket, soccer, volleyball, indoor volleyball, besides other games.

Trease conceded that students had limited exposure to sports and the college aimed at developing their motor skills.

“Once they start, they enjoy it so much and start liking it,” she says.

Four girls, aged between 9 and 11 years, from dugym, a Dubai-based gymnastics and trampoline club, performed gymnastics for the DWC students.

Darby Heino, Charlise Koch, Philippa Tanoyo and Rachel Guerreiro from different schools in Dubai did several group and individual routines.

Heino from the American School of Dubai said she loved performing her routines in front of students and was an absolute gymnastics enthusiast and a health buff.

Jawaher Al Muhairi, a DWC student, said, “I look forward to the sports day as it is a lot of fun and we participate in so many interesting sports.”
