DUBAI - Five UAE students topped the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) board internationally and were among those honoured at a ceremony in Dubai last night.

The achievers who excelled in University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) were congratulated at the Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cambridge Awards, at the Mina A’Salam Hotel in Dubai last night.

Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone Authority, presented the awards while Dr Abdulla Al Karam, Chairman of Board of Directors and Director-General of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) attended the event along with Fatma Al Marr, CEO of Dubai School Agency, Jameela Al Muhair, Chief of Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau, Mohammed Darwish, Chief of Licensing and Customer Services, and Dr. Wafi Dawood, Chief of Organisational Excellence; and Christine Daw, CIE’s Regional Manager for Middle East and North Africa.

They were Noira Khan, IGCSE Biology, from Al Worood School; Kavya Uday Joshi, IGCSE English as a Second Language, Our Own English High School; Riad Azmi Kahoush, IGCSE Arabic as First Language, Universal Private School; Seung Hun Ham, IGCSE Mathematics (without course work), International School of Choueifat Dubai; and Sharang Biswas, IGCSE Physics, International School of Choueifat Abu Dhabi.

‘CIE congratulates these students for gaining exceptional results in their examinations,’ said Christine Daw. ‘These achievements are the start of a bright future for the talented students of United Arab Emirates. They should be proud to have gained qualifications that will help provide a solid foundation for them in the coming years.’

All awards presented at the ceremony are named after Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who has been the patron of the awards for the last six years.

The awards recognised students in the categories including Cambridge Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement, Cambridge Special Achievement Award and the Cambridge Award for School Community.

The five were recognised in the Cambridge Top in the World Prizes - awards presented to those candidates who have achieved the highest standard marks in the world in a Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge International AS or A Level subject in the June 2007 examination session.
