Throughout history, nations have always been defined by their ability to preserve their character and build on their identity. The language of any nation is unquestionably the backbone which preserves its identity. Hence, the decision by the UAE Cabinet on Sunday to reinforce the position of Arabic in the country is a welcome step, given that this decision will hopefully revitalise the role played by Arabic.

The Cabinet has stipulated that Arabic is to be used as the official language in all correspondence of all federal authorities and establishments in the country. The decision surely should not come as a surprise but should be seen as a long-overdue step. After all, the UAE is an Arab and Muslim country, and as such, Arabic is an integral part of its identity. In fact, UAE society would not be able to survive without the Arab and Islamic roots as the basis of its characteristics, especially in a globalalised world.

It is within this context that President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has declared 2008 the "year of national identity".

And when looking at where the UAE stands today as a nation, matters should be placed in their rightful perspective. The country is proud of the advancement it has attained in various fields, including the economic and the political. But the nation also realises that without the preservation of its identity - and the Arabic language is a major part of that process - such achievements would fall short.

It is this understanding of the importance of preserving its language and identity that will enable the UAE to withstand any future challenges.
