Dubai: A proposal to enforce compulsory education from kindergarten to grade 12 is part of the Ministry of Education strategy 2008-2010, announced the Minister of Education.
Dr Hanif Hassan said, during a meeting with the Directors of education zones and schools in Dubai and Northern Emirates to introduce the ministry's strategy plan, that compulsory education till grade 12 will be implemented in the UAE once the Cabinet has approved the proposal.
Currently the compulsory education for children is from grade 1 to grade 12.
Best standards
The Ministry of Education strategy for 2008-2010 aims to build new strategies that are in line with the best academic standards to be able to maintain the national identity through an emphasis on Arabic and Islamic values.
"Recently, the national curriculum committee issued a decision to establish an Arabic Language exam for all school [pupils] in all stages to be equivalent to the Toefl English exam to guarantee the distinctiveness of our students in the Arabic language as well. The ministry will also organise regular meetings with every education zone to discuss the strategic plan and to get ideas and suggestions from the education field," said Hassan.
The academic year and school day will be extended as part of the strategy.
