DUBAI -National teachers could soon be travelling to the United Kingdom following British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s endorsement of the teachers’ exchange programme during his visit to Dubai on Tuesday.

“The prime minister endorsed professional exchange programmes and research cooperation between our two countries. The professional exchange programme would involve Emirati teachers working alongside British teachers to gain international experience and promote intercultural dialogue – with a two-way element,” said Alison Devine, British Council Regional Manager Education UK Middle East.

“The cooperation would involve sharing of research expertise and methodology. There will be ongoing discussions and we will be taking our ideas further at the Young Arab Leaders (YAL) summit in the UK in July,” added Devine.

Brown held discussions with top officials from YAL’s UAE Chapter and the British Council during his hour-long meeting at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). He met with five focus groups to discuss issues pertaining to education, human resources, human capital, energy and entrepreneurship. British Council, UAE, is already working on promoting research cooperation in different areas of higher education institutions in the UAE and UK. “The prime minister spoke about bringing collaborative research models from the UK to the UAE and introducing several community initiatives followed in the UK,” said Muna Al Gurg, Vice-Chairwoman of YAL, UAE Chapter.
