DUBAI — Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and President of Zayed University, honoured 18 students who won the Noor Ali Rashed Student Documentary Photography Award Competition (Still and Video Photography) at a ceremony held on Wednesday at Zayed University’s Dubai Campus.
Bearing the theme, ‘Writing With Light,’ the 2008 Zayed University Noor Ali Rashid Student Documentary Photography Award was designed to honour Royal Photographer Noor Ali Rashid and continue his legacy by encouraging students to focus their talents on visual bodies of work that capture the glimpses of the UAE’s land, people, and leaders.
The competition was open to all higher education institutions in the UAE, with photographic and video entries, which focused on three broad topics, UAE leaders, UAE land and UAE people.
Shaikh Nahayan said, “ Through this event we witness together the transformative power of the lens. Photography is the medium that translates insightful and artful vision for others to comprehend, and videography turns a storyteller’s vision into moving pictures.”
“Very high standards have been set for this competition over the past two years and I am very pleased that this year’s entrants have met and surpassed them. Putting your work before the eyes of judges requires confidence and so I expect that you will learn much through this competition and that the experience will serve you well in your future endeavors,” he added.
Dr Sulaiman Al Jassim, Vice -President of Zayed University, said, “The competition encourages students to take a close look at the UAE. its land, its people and its leaders.”
