The strategic deployment of technology in the classrooms could have a major impact on the long-term development of the United Arab Emirates, according to a leading UNESCO expert.
According to new research, the careful deployment of computer-technology provides one of the most effective routes to a wider knowledge base and faster skills development within schools. However, the use of such tools needs to be integrated into a wider educational framework, including tutor-led teaching.
When effectively applied, education is one of the main contributors to sustainable development, contributing to the preparation of the next generation of leaders and workers.
The major study into the field of ICT-Support Education is being supported by the British University in Dubai, the region's first research-based, postgraduate university.
Professor Vassilios Makrakis, from the University of Crete and UNESCO Chairholder in the subject of 'ICT in Education for Sustainable Development', will discuss how the UAE can achieve a sustainable society, and the benefits and implications for tertiary institutions of ICT implementation in local high schools, at a special workshop at BUiD.
'ICT taps into the younger generation's capacity and interest in learning via new media, expanding their learning opportunities and resulting in enhanced preparation for further education and work,' said Professor Makrakis.
Also participating in the session will be a range of educators and government officials, who will review progress to date on introducing ITC into the UAE's education system.
'Technology is constantly advancing and inspiring innovation in all areas of life, particularly education. Realizing the potential of ICT for achieving quality, sustainable education in the UAE is an essential step,' said Dr. Abdullah Alshamsi, University Vice-Chancellor, The British University in Dubai.
Technology in Education for Sustainable Development - Challenges and Opportunities for UAE Education will be held on Monday, 28 April from 6:30 - 8:00pm in the BUiD Auditorium, Block 17, Knowledge Village.
