Dubai: The Mission Green Earth: Stand Up and take action campaign is targeting UAE residents to support the creation of a sustainable environment through two challenges.
All over the country, residents will Stand Up and read a pledge in support of the Millennium Development Goals with a focus on environmental sustainability.
The Stand Up will be reported along with a photograph to be added to the global count for the Guinness Book Record for the largest number of people standing up for a cause.
Participants will take action through actively committing to conserve energy and water and reduce waste. They will also be motivated to plant trees and plants that require lesser of the earth's natural resources, including valuable water, for their survival and maintenance.
Held under the patronage of UN Messenger of Peace HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussain, Wife of HH Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, with the support of UNDP, UNEP and the International Humanitarian City (IHC),
The Mission Green Earth - Stand up and Take Action 2008,' campaign will take place on October 17, 18 and 19.
"The ultimate aim of the Mission Green Earth campaign is to foster a contextual debate on sustainable living and generate concrete changes in the UAE, at both individual and collective levels. It is about advocating individual and corporate social responsibility in the UAE and providing a platform for dialogue and debate in this sense, which makes the involvement of the International Humanitarian City so relevant," said Elise Bijon, Communications Officer, International Humanitarian City.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi Municipality are promoting the planting of trees across the emirate while KHDA has pledged that public and private educational institutions under the authority will stand up in solidarity for the cause. Hospitals, private companies and government departments are all set to take part in the campaign
"Ever since the campaign has been launched, we have seen a number of entities in the UAE come forward to take part and this includes many companies from the corporate sector, salient educational institutions, health and hospitality institutions," said Rugmani Prabhakar, country coordinator for the campaign.
As part of keeping up the momentum of environmental awareness, the United Nations Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN) in partnership with the 'Mission Green Earth: Stand Up and Take Action 2008' organisers, also held a round table to reflect on the Humanitarian Impact of Climate Change. A series of short films produced by (IRIN) was also screened at the event.
