Dubai: The Dubai Cares Million Book Challenge ended on Sunday with school children reading more than one million books.

However, the final figure of books read is yet to be released as parents are expected to submit a final tally of books read by their children on Monday.

Reem Al Hashemi, Minister of State and Chairperson of Dubai Cares Board of Directors, said: "The success of the Million Book Challenge has been possible because of the hard work and effort of students and children throughout the community."

For each book read by children in Dubai, Dubai Cares will purchase and donate a book in the local language to needy children around the world.

The distribution of books will be managed by organisations including Arab NGO's and Room to Read.
