DUBAI - The seventh edition of the Ibdaa Media Student Awards is now open for applications, Dubai Media City (DMC) announced on Saturday.

This year's awards feature the introduction of a new category called 'mobile film', which will honour the best short film captured through a mobile phone, officials said

The competition is open to all undergraduate and fresh graduates of the year 2007-2008. Entry forms are available on www.ibdaa-awards.ae.

The shortlisted entries will be showcased at an exhibition from November 24 to 29. The winners will be acknowledged at an awards ceremony on November 27. The award categories this year include journalism (non-news), radio, animation, graphic arts, analogue photography, digital photography, print advertising, TV advertising, film/TV feature, TV documentary and mobile film.

The venue of the exhibition and the awards ceremony will be announced later and the deadline for the submissions is October 9.

Mohamed Almulla, Executive Director of Dubai Media City and Coordinator General of Ibda'a Awards, said, "We are delighted to announce the seventh edition of the Ibda'a Media Student Awards. The awards this year will help showcase talent from around the world and contribute to the growth of the global media industry."

"The introduction of a new category for films shot on a mobile phone reflects our keenness to embrace new trends and acknowledge the changing face of media technology. Movie making by mobile phones has gained international recognition through film festivals from Paris to Japan and have even led to the launch of academic courses by leading universities worldwide," he added.

The 2007 edition of Ibda'a attracted over 2,200 entries from more than 21 countries including Egypt, India, Iran, Lebanon, Pakistan, the Philippines, the UK and UAE.
