Dubai: The Modern High School will move to a new campus in Nad Al Sheba but the exact date has yet to be determined by the school's management.

The school is one of the 17 schools in Dubai operated by the Global Management Systems (GEMS) a private education provider, which follows the Indian curriculum.

The main reasons for the school's relocation are increasing rents.

"The school has also outgrown the site," said Monica Harter, Corporate and Communications Director at GEMS.

An official letter will be sent to the parents once the exact date of the relocation is decided by the management.

Harter was unable to say when exactly the school will move to its new premises.

No date fixed

A total of 22,000 pupils attend the school, which is considered an up-market day school and has been at its current premises for about 25 years.

"The lease for the school has expired and the landlord does not wish to renew it. However, we got it renewed for a temporary period until the middle of next year.

"But the renewal has been at a significantly higher rate," said Harter.

Parents said the school administration had shown them the location map of where the school is going to be moved.

While some were told that the relocation will take place in September, others were told March next year.

Huge applicant pool

New shift for boys

A large number of applicants has forced the Sharjah Indian School to start an afternoon shift for boys from Grade 6 to 12.

The school is operated by the Indian Association Sharjah. The afternoon shift will run from 1pm to 6.30pm. K.K. Balan, acting president of the association, said: "The number of applicants has increased. We wanted to accommodate everyone and so the best manner to go about it was to start an afternoon shift for which we have got the necessary permission from the Ministry of Education."

A parent said: "Pupils who will be preparing themselves for school exams and other competitive exams will feel exhausted by the end of the day with changed timings throwing their routine out of gear. Since they get back home late, they will not be interested in studying till late and with changed timings taking a toll on their body clock, they will feel lethargic about getting up early in the morning."
