RAS AL KHAIMAH — High blood pressure is increasingly spreading among children and teenagers in the UAE and the world at large, said doctors during a medical conference organised recently at the cultural centre in Ras Al Khaimah.

During the conference attended by over 400 medical professionals from the UAE and overseas, doctors stressed that the hospitals and healthcare centres are now registering scores of young patients suffering from high blood pressure, a malady that was usually linked to old age.

The conference, titled ‘Check your blood pressure at home’, was organised by the Ras Al Khaimah Health Department with the aim of promoting awareness among the public for the prevention and treatment of blood pressure.

The doctors attributed the prevalence of malady among young people to obesity among the children resulting from improper diets in addition to lack of exercise and lack of awareness. Khalifa Al Muhairi Maktoum, Deputy Director of the Ras Al Khaimah Health Department, said there is a need to strengthen preventive measures to curb blood pressure, which is often referred to as a ‘silent killer’.
