MUSCAT - The GCC states consider technical education as a vital factor in social and economic development because of the rapid technological changes taking place around the world, according to a senior Omani official.

Dr Hassan bin Said Kashob, Dean of the Salalah Technical College, said member states of the bloc were keen to outline general objectives of their technological education programmes and to conduct comprehensive studies to determine the actual requirements of their labour markets. He was speaking at a meeting of officials in charge of technical education in the GCC that began in Salalah on Saturday.

Hamad bin Khamis al Amri, Under-secretary for Technical Education and Vocational Training at the Manpower Ministry, chaired the inaugural session.

Dr Omar Sulaiman Al Humaidi, Secretary of the ‘GCC Committee of Officials In-charge of Technical Education’, said the GCC states currently needed some two million technicians in various industrial and technical disciplines.
