Dubai: While applying to universities, studying for exams and juggling other extra-curricular activities 16-year-old Shaleen Sukthankar has found the time to make a difference.

This week the grade 12 student at Emirates International School, and members of her volunteer group Teen Environmental Awareness Management (Team), arranged for safety officers to speak to 60 construction workers on safety, nutrition and health at Dubai Silicon Oasis.

Dubai-based safety officer Hasnain Hussain volunteered his time to inform workers about eating well, getting enough sleep and avoiding drugs, smoking and alcohol. He also conducted a fire drill and heat awareness session.

Since May this year the volunteer group has been approaching construction companies and presenting talks on safety issues.

"Dubai, known for its architectural brilliance, is also looking into providing a safe and healthy environment for the people who toiled to create it. With the high temperatures labourers work in, safety is of utmost importance," Sukthankar said.

Sukthankar recently participated in the Emirates Environmental Group's can collection drive, which was held across the country.
