ABU DHABI — As part of its Iqra project, Zakat Fund has offered Dh1.151 million to the educational zones and institutions in the UAE to support the needy students during 2008.

The fund aims at helping 399 needy students pay tuition fees for the current academic year.

Jamal Khalaf Al Mazrouei, acting secretary general of the fund, delivered cheques to the representatives of Al Ain, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain, Knowledge Authority and Human Resources Development in Dubai yesterday.

The donation is in line with objectives of the fund and continuation of Iqra project launched in 2005.

The fund has so far paid Dh15 million to sponsor about 10,000 needy students.

The move is also in line with the directives of the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to provide proper school environment to the students and alleviate burden on guardians. —
