DUBAI // More than 1,000 refurbished computers will be used to improve the technical skills of young Emiratis and to help them compete in the job market.

The computers, which were yesterday given to the National Human Resource Development and Employment Authority (Tamia), are part of an initiative to protect the environment and improve people’s knowledge of technology.

“We endeavour to support efforts aimed at developing human resources and enhancing the recycling culture, especially as these computers will support the programmes that seek to equip young nationals with new skills,” said Hussain Nasser Lootah, the acting director general of Dubai Municipality.

The initiative is a joint venture between the municipality and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Charity and Humanitarian Foundation (MBRF).

Since the Dh1.5 million (US$408,382) project was launched in Feb 2007, Mr Lootah said 2,040 refurbished computers had been distributed to charities, educational institutions, special needs centres and NGOs.

Ninety computers have been sent to Oman and 24 computers have gone to Sudan, where a charity will distribute them. An additional 45 computers have been sent to the Zayed Orphanage in Afghanistan.

The initiative has received tremendous response from government and private institutions, said Ibrahim Bumelha of the MBRF.

“We aim to collect about 5,000 computers a year and hope to make it 10,000 with more concerted efforts,” Mr Bumelha added.

“With these computers and their accessories, the foundation will try to support development and educational projects, and also spread the electronic culture in some underdeveloped countries in the light of the existing co-operation and friendship we have with them.

Those who wish to donate used equipment should contact Dubai Municipality, or call its contact centre on 800900.
