Dubai: Pupils are required to have 75 per cent attendance to qualify for the Grade 10 and Grade 12 All India Central Board examinations, according to a circular issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi.
The CBSE said it can only overlook a 15 per cent absence provided it is backed by the school principal's recommendation.
There are over 40 CBSE affiliated schools in the UAE and over 50 in the Gulf.
Ashok Kumar, principal of the Indian High School Dubai and a member of the governing council of the CBSE, said: "If pupils fall short of attendance, their parents should not approach the CBSE directly, but refer the matter to the school principal who will then forward a justification to the board."
Students in the UAE feel that mandatory attendance should be reduced to 60 per cent.
They said they would like to revise at home once the syllabus is completed.
