DUBAI - As the real estate sector in the emirates surges forward, several educational institutions are taking the cue and offering specialised courses to churn out professionals for the sector.
The British University in Dubai (BUiD) is the most recent to offer a course to help experts tackle complexities of the construction industry in GCC countries.
The research-based postgraduate university announced on Wednesday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with King's College London to offer a MSc degree in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution. Real estate companies like ETA Star Properties, on the other hand, say they definitely prefer to recruit professionals with a good grasp of the construction sector.
BUiD executives believe this course will help provide the right mix of locally trained specialists to support the construction industry. The course hopes to attract students including lawyers, engineers of various disciplines, architects, surveyors and other professionals. "The agreement to offer the new MSc course in partnership with King's College London provides us with an excellent basis to increase the number of research-based studies of the sector and enhance the range of expert resources to support regional construction markets," said Dr Abdullah Alshamsi, Vice-Chancellor, The British University in Dubai.
Balaji Parthasarathy, general manager of Business Development at the ETA Start Properties, said the graduates with a real estate background would have a good understanding of the market. "It definitely helps while recruiting staff. We also encourage our staff to take up such courses as part of our regular training programmes. All our employees should be equipped to handle any boom. Such courses are generally available in well-established real estate markets," he said.
The first intake of students for the new degree will commence in 2009 and is expected to receive a strong response from the region.
