Dubai: All public schools are expected to acquire an academic accreditation by the end of 2010 in a recent initiative by the Ministry of Education to raise the standards of education to higher and even international standards.

Dr Hanif Hassan, Minister of Education, said, "The goal of the Accreditation and Licensing Department depends on implementing standards and licensing procedures, observing the quality performance and efficiency of government schools, and developing academic accreditation of government schools and their performance protocols."

The new department was established recently as part of the new restructuring implemented at the Ministry of Education, where the ministry has reduced the number of its supervisory departments from 27 to 16.

Shaikha Al Shamsi, Director of Accreditation and Licensing Department who was appointed to handle this task in May, explained that the purpose of yesterday's meeting was to announce a new initiative aimed at establishing a network with teachers and education zones to establish international standards tailored to respond to the needs of the country.

During the next term, 10 pilot schools are welcomed to volunteer for the academic accreditation, which will take effect next year.
