ABU DHABI — The courses and activities of the Summer Challenge Programme for national students from grades nine to 11 will begin today.

This was announced by Dr Mugheer Al Khaili, Director-General of Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC), yesterday at the ADEC Art Hall after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the prestigious universities in the country such as UAE University, Zayed University, Abu Dhabi University and Higher Colleges of Technology.

Under the MoU, courses in English, IT, math/science and vocational education will be offered. The students who will enter their final year of schooling next year have the opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills in these important subjects.

ADEC board selected different providers including universities and private companies to provide quality and focused programmes in each area.

This year, 3,800 students from across the Abu Dhabi emirate will be able to take part in the Summer Challenge Programme this year. The programme is being held at public schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and in five locations in Al Gharbia.

The programme ends on July 17.

The courses are being offered by higher education institutions, including Zayed University, UAE University, Abu Dhabi University and Higher Colleges of Technology, and by several private providers including Mosaica, Nord Anglia, and German Technical Cooperation (GTZ).

A monitoring agency will train and coordinate a team of monitors who will inspect all sites on a regular basis to guarantee the quality of programmes.

The Summer Challenge Programme aims at improving the learning outcomes and polishing the students' skills, Dr Al Khaili said.

"The major aim of the programme is to provide a variety of positive learning experiences for senior students that improve their knowledge and skills in and attitude towards key subject areas," said Dr Al Khaili.
