DUBAI — As many as 226 students of the Memon community in the UAE, who excelled in their studies in the 2007-08 academic year, were on Friday honoured by the community leadership.

The 132 girls and 94 boys were selected through a rigorous process by a special committee.

Mohammad Umer Abdul Khaliq, who had memorised the Holy Quran, received a special prize, including free Umrah package by road. The Special Talent Award went to Humaira Anwar and Mohammed Madani Haji Rafik.

A grant of Dh5,000 each for 20 school and college students was announced on behalf of Senior Vice-President Aboobaker Cassim, who could not attend the event because of ill health.
